Senior boys through to next round of Ulster B Cup
The senior boys soccer team have progressed through to the next stage of the Ulster B Cup after a comprehensive 5-1 victory over a young, but spirited Colaiste Ailigh team.
Two goals each from Aaron Kelly and Matthew O Rourke and one from Day Rowan was enough to ease the lads through to the next stage. The team started off somewhat rusty in this their first outing of the year. The tricky forward movement and interplay from the Letterkenny men caused many an anxious moment in the FVC defence but the backline of Simon Catterson, John Hunter, Tiarnan Mc Connell and Kieran Crawford held firm in front of the impressive Matthew Dalton who was making his debut in goals for the senior side.
The breakthrough came in somewhat fortuitous fashion when a speculative attempt from captain Aaron Kelly somehow squirmed under the unfortunate Ailigh ‘keeper. The opening goal seemed to have the dual role of galvanising Finn Valley, while at the same time knocking the wind out of Ailigh. Matthew O Rourke added a second from a well placed freekick before adding his second before the break after good work from Kelly.
The scond half began with Colaiste Ailigh coming out of the blocks with renewed vigour and should have clawed an early goal back but for a terrific save from the Finn Valley stopper Dalton. The game ebbed and flowed for the next 15 minutes until Ailigh got the goal their performance deserved from an excellent freekick. Finn Valley showed excellent attitude to step up a level again when Kelly got his second after excellent work from the tireless Thomas Mc Elchar on the left. Substitute Day Rowan finished off the scoring with a close range finish.
The lads have now earned the right to meet Milford side Mulroy College in the next round with the game scheduled for early after the mid-term break.
