FVC host successful Debating Competition 2024
What an inspirational group of young people! We as a school community are extremely proud of our FVC Debating Mentors and the 5th Class students from 8 of our local primary schools who performed amazingly at our inaugural FVC Primary School Debating Competition 2024.
Teams from Robertson’s NS, Glencovitt NS, St. Mary’s Stranorlar, Sessaighoneill NS, St. Safan’s NS, Scoil Padraig Drumkeen, Scoil Bhríde Convoy and Dooish NS, presented very strong arguments for and against the motions of ‘Homework is necessary for students to learn’, ‘School uniforms should be mandatory in all schools’ and for the final motion ‘Video games are beneficial and not harmful to children’.
The judges highly commended the students on the quality of their research, how well they presented their arguments and their skill at refute of their opponents points of view.
After the very closely contested semi-finals, four teams progressed to our two finals. This was a proud moment for us as our FVC debating students used their expertise & knowledge to mentor the primary school finalists and prepare them for their last motion. The atmosphere was electric for this very exciting final round.
Huge congratulations to Dooish NS, winners of our Inaugural FVC Debating Cup after a nail biting final with Glencovitt NS. Congratulations also to our Inaugural FVC Shield winners Scoil Bhride who were triumphant in their final against Sessiaghoneill NS.
Ms Mc Geehan, who was the brainchild and energy behind this idea should be very proud of the success of this event. She would like to give huge thanks to everyone for their invaluable input, to our fabulous judges, our mentors, our English Department and to Ms Mc Kean for her debating expertise!
It was lovely to see students teach and learn from one another, sharing skills, knowledge and recognizing that students’ perspectives and experiences add value to each others learning process.”
