Class O’Casey had a very exciting field trip on Monday afternoon, where they visited Letterkenny Garda Station as part of their CSPE course.

The third year group visited the station for their project on Justice, which will go towards their final Junior Cert grade.

The visit was informative, fun and interactive, with students getting a full tour of the station, including the communications hub, the CCTV room and the interview room.

The highlight of the visit was meeting the Garda Forensics Team, who showed the students how to analyse finger prints and foot prints in a criminal investigation.

The class were introduced the county’s Traffic Corps team, who showed them how to use the breathalyser and the speed gun, in order to catch people breaking the rules of the road.

Students were in awe at the CCTV live feed that is available to Gardai 24 hours a day from the station, where they can clearly see people walking the streets of Letterkenny and instruct Guards on the street where possible crimes can be taking place.

Groups of four were then escorted around the town in a Garda car, where they got to use the lights and sirens and they were shown the protocols for dealing with an emergency.

After a fun-filled afternoon, some of the group found themselves handcuffed and placed in a holding cell, but luckily they were released without further charge!

Well done to all the students who took part in the project and a big thank you to all the personnel in the Garda Station for making it such an enjoyable afternoon.
