Certification and Progression

What is the National Framework of Qualifications?

The National Framework of Qualifications is a framework for all qualifications in Ireland.  It is a structure and has ten levels.  For each level, a range of standards and knowledge, skill and competence have been determined.  These standards define what needs to be achieved to gain awards at each level.

What is the Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC)?

This is a national body which was set up under the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland to validate and certify further education programmes and set and maintain standards on all further education courses.

FETAC awards will occupy levels 1-6 on the National Framework of Qualifications.  This framework brings clarity to the further education and training sector and makes it simple to compare and understand the different awards available.    Further information on FETAC is available on their website at www.fetac.ie.

What is a FETAC Module?

A module is a statement of the standard to be achieved to gain a FETAC award.  Credit is awarded for each module successfully completed.   Modules with Donegal VEC can be taken at levels 1-5.  A record of achievement will be awarded to candidates who successfully complete one or more modules.  Module credits can be accumulated over a period of time.

What is a FETAC Certificate?

With Donegal VEC, certificates can be taken at levels 1-5.  Each certificate consists of 8 modules.  Contact your course organiser for further details on individual programmes.

What is the Higher Education and Training Awards Council (HETAC)?<!--[endif]-->

HETAC is the qualifications awarding body for third-level education and training institutions outside the university sector other than the Dublin Institute of Technology and it occupies levels 6-10 on the National Framework of Qualifications.

Progression Opportunities

Many people  who have completed programmes with Donega1 VEC have progressed onto further education, training and employment.  Progression can be made within Levels 1-5 with Donegal VEC.  For example,  Learning for Living offers FETAC at Levels 1-3.  Someone achieving FETAC Level 3 with the Learning for Living Programme would have the opportunity to progress onto a BTEI or VTOS programme at Levels 4 or 5.

Those achieving accreditation at Level 5, would have the opportunity to progress onto local Institutes of Technology in Letterkenny or Sligo, or other Higher Education institutions through the Higher Education Links Scheme (HELS – see below). Alternatively, opportunities may be available for progression to Further Education in Northern Ireland.

For a confidential discussion on your individual progression options, please talk to the Adult Guidance Service or your programme coordinator.

Higher Education Links Scheme (HELS)

The Higher Education Links Scheme facilitates the transfer of students who have achieved a FETAC Level II Certificate to Third Level Colleges throughout the country.  There are approximately 2000 places available in over 250 colleges on this Scheme.  This transfer is based solely on the results of your FETAC Course.
